In choosing to begin the basic Rolfing Structural Integration® Series of 10 sessions you are giving yourself a gift that may enhance your life in many ways. Please remember that your body, your personality and your life are unique – unlike anyone else’s. Therefore, your Rolfing Structural Integration® Sessions and experiences will be unique to you. Stories that you’ve heard or read about someone else’s Rolfing Structural Integration® experiences are their stories. You will have your own unique experiences. I suggest you put aside expectations as much as possible and allow yourself the fullness, the uniqueness of your own experience.
My approach is to honor each person’s uniqueness. We will be co-creators in this process. Please keep me informed of any new or unusual sensations or awareness you may experience.
During the sessions stay connected to your body experience. Your attention to the area being worked is valuable as it reduces your discomfort and facilitates change. Should you find your attention to your body’s sensations drifting then bring your attention back to the work we are doing. Brief pauses or ‘breathers’ are often needed during the session. Please let me know if you need a few deep breaths before proceeding with our work.
Eat something an hour or so before your appointment. If your blood sugar is too low during the session you may feel exhausted. Drinking plenty of water after a session will help cleanse and clear the system.
All Rolfing Structural Integration® Sessions are done with the client wearing their underwear. Please wear underwear to your sessions. Men please wear jockey style briefs. Women please wear bra and underpants. Do not wear a skin oil or body lotion during a Rolfing Structural Integration® Session. Combined with your own natural oil it can make the skin too ‘slippery’ a surface to Rolf on.
If you are in a regular exercise program or training for a strenuous event please let me know. I suggest any easy day of exercises or a rest-day off from your regular work program on your Rolfing days. This will allow the area we have worked on to settle in without other stressful stimulation. You may maintain your usual exercise program or begin one during the course of your Rolfing Structural Integration®, with attention to how the program supports your purpose in being Rolfed.
If you are undergoing psychotherapy, or any other form of counseling for emotional reasons, please let me know. I suggest you inform your therapist that you are being Rolfed.
If it is necessary that we spend our scheduled appointment time talking instead of hands on work, I expect to be paid for my time. This means that we will schedule an additional session in the series.
Most often the initial process of Rolfing Structural Integration® is accomplished in 10 -12 sessions. Along with the Rolfing Structural Integration® I also offer Rolfing Structural Integration® Movement Work. This is an educational process through body awareness that teaches us about our movement patterns in daily life. It’s focus is in evoking easy and balanced movement. It is a valuable compliment to the structural work of Rolfing Structural Integration®, and the process of embodiment.
Be aware that you are going through a powerful process that is affecting you deeply, both physically and emotionally. Go easy on yourself. Be alert to the changes in yourself and your reactions to others. You may wish to keep a journal during this work to record your personal observations of your process.
